Alberta Cardston Cougars

The Cardston Cougars from Alberta enter LIT this year having already won first place in
the SAIT Belle Classic and Catholic Central Winter Classic, in addition to placing third in the
Cougar Classic. The team won nine of ten games last season, placing fifth in the league. Breanna
Fox played for the U17 Alberta Team at the Indigenous Games in Toronto this past summer.
Interestingly, Hanna Nunn is very successful in rodeo! The Cardston Cougars’ philosophy of
leadership is that strong leaders are the ones who lead by example and are willing to do
something to the best of their abilities, even if it’s hard or uncomfortable. There are three players
that especially portray this type of leadership: Ava Hardy is very positive and a team builder,
Maddie Leishman is a steady influence on the team, and Erika Smith brings some defensive
toughness and rebounding energy to the team. The team’s belief regarding success is that a
successful team is one that plays for each other. For the Cougars, it is also about effort and that
all players give maximum energy every time they step onto the court.
