LIT 65 Day 1 Recap

The first day of Lit 65 was exciting and a big success. The day kicked off with the pep rally which included all of the teams and lots of Luther spirit! The first game was between the Sisler Spartans and the Kelowna Christian Knights; both teams started off strong, but Sisler was very quick on their feet and was able to pull away with the win. Unfortunately Jackson Borne of the Kelowna Christian Knights had an injury but is on the mend; hopefully he will be able to play tomorrow. The first game of LIT had an end score of 90-61 for the Sisler Spartans. An impressive win and a great way to start off this year's LIT. The second game was Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs against the St. Joseph Guardians. It was a very action- packed game. Sir Winston Churchill was very aggressive and led a fast paced game, being really keen on the rebounds. St Joseph's Guardians kept up with the Bulldog's fast pace but were not quite able to outscore them; the final score was 80-71 for the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs. The first girl's game of LIT 65 featured Winnipeg's Sisler Spartans and Regina's Miller Marauders. Sisler pulled ahead right from the start with star players Raizel Guinto and Alyssa Esperanzate scoring a lot and keeping a safe lead in points. Although the Miller Marauders put up a respectable fight, it is hard to play an out-of-province team resulting in an end score of 92-57 for the Spartans. The Sisler Spartans will move onto the final and Miller will play for third place as well. The fourth game of the day was a competitive, quick paced game between the Campbell Tartans and the Garden City Gophers. Both teams were quick on their feet and both had accurate shooters. The game began with Campbell taking the lead, however in the third quarter the Gophers managed to tie it up 81-81 making it a tense and exciting game. In the end, Campbell scraped by with the win at 87-81 after an intense last two quarters. The fifth and final game of today was preceeded by our opening ceremonies with speakers like Kevin Vollet, our special guest, and our tournament coordinator Troy Casper. The game followed featuring our very own Luther Lions against the Raymond Comets. The game had an intense start filled with competition and school spirit from our Luther fans. After the exciting first half, Luther was only down by one with a score of 38-39 at halftime. Unfortunately, however, Luther took some losses in the 3rd and 4th quarters like player Carter Shewchuk injuring his calf. In the end Luther lost 71-92. It was a great game nonetheless, with the stands packed full of enthusiastic and encouraging fans. Today was a wonderful kickoff to LIT 65. Stay tuned for more info and come on down to Luther over the next two days to watch some more great basketball.
