60th Annual Luther Invitational Tournament Underway

Luther College High School will be celebrating its 60th annual Luther Invitational Tournament (LIT) February 9-11, 2012.  The tournament features eight teams representing Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba; the tournament will also feature the first-ever senior girls’ tournament, the Challenge Cup.

"We are extremely excited to be celebrating our 60th Diamond Jubilee year, and are especially proud to be welcoming Eli Pasquale as this year's Special Guest," LIT Tournament Director Dave Hall said.

Luther College would like to welcome Eli Pasquale as the special guest to this year's tournament. Mr. Pasquale grew up in Sudbury, Ontario, and began his basketball career playing for the University of Victoria Vikings where he led the team to five straight CIAU Championships. Mr. Pasquale won gold against the USA in the World University Games in 1983. Mr. Pasquale stands as the University of Victoria's top scorer and his jersey, number 13, has been retired. In 1984, Mr. Pasquale was drafted by the NBA Seattle SuperSonics. In the same year, he led the Canadian Men's Baskteball team to a fourth place finish in the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles. This began Mr. Pasquale's lengthy 15 year career playing basketball for Canada, where he would also compete in the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul Korea. Mr. Pasquale had played professional basketball internationally playing in Argentina, Germany, and Switzerland. Mr. Pasquale played in four World Championships before retiring from basketball. Mr. Pasquale was inducted to the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003, the Basketball British Columbia Hall of Fame in 2004, the University of Victoria Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Today, Mr. Pasquale operates and organizes a basketball sports school called Eli Pasquale Sports Group, which runs throughout Vancouver Island. Luther College is pleased to have such an accomplished basketball player attend this year's LIT.

This year’s teams for 60th Luther Invitational Tournament are:

  • Calgary Bishop Grandin; Cardston Cougars (Alberta)
  • Regina Luther College Lions; Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders; Regina Riffel Royals; Regina LeBoldus Golden Suns (Saskatchewan)
  • Winnipeg John Taylor; Winnipeg Calvin (Manitoba).

This year marks the beginning of a new tradition for L.I.T; in commemoration of the 60th annual L.I.T., the Challenge Cup has been established. The Challenge Cup will be showcasing the talent of two senior girls basketball teams, whom this year are the Luther Lions and the Moose Jaw Peacock Toilers, in hopes that the spirit of LIT will involve more people and bring the atmosphere of the tournament to a whole new level.

“I would like to thank the students, staff and faculty who have worked tirelessly in preparation of the tournament,” Hall said.  “We look forward to seeing everyone attend the tournament to celebrate 60 years of tradition and sportsmanship.”
